Katihar, a historically significant district of Bihar, was established as an independent district on 2 October 1973, after being separated from Purnia district. Its history dates back to ancient times, when the region was associated with the Anga and Magadha kingdoms. It later came under Muslim and Mughal influence, followed by British rule in the 18th century.Katihar has a rich cultural and religious heritage, with Manihari being an important religious destination associated with local traditions. The district was also influenced by the zamindari system, particularly the prominent Choudhary family. Following India’s independence, Katihar continued to develop as an important administrative, commercial and transport centre in northeastern Bihar.
